The much improved Environment gives lower Mortality

The intelligent canopy has an initial ambient temperature of 20 to 21°. Slats and slurry are correspondingly cooler. This reduces the bacterial activity, and because ammonia is produced by bacteria, the ammonia emission is lower. The Danish Environmental Ministry publishes 10 % less ammonia per degree cooler for slurry. Several reports show max. 70 % reductions in ammonia emission by acidification of slurry, the remaining emission come from urine and faeces at the slats. From above you can stipulate that reducing the ambient temperature lower the ammonia emission by 15 %.

The National French Pig Institute has compared the concentration of ammonia and CO2 in two batches weaners. The reference room had no canopies; the other room had intelligent canopies and was 8 degree cooler. The concentration was 80 % less, and from the CO2 recordings you can calculate air flow and ammonia emission. The calculation showed 68 % lower emission, which fits very well with 15 % lower emission per degree lower temperature.

The report, which also is available in English, also showed big energy savings. During both batches the minimum ventilation was too big resulting in night temperatures of 15 – 16° the first week. This forces the heat lamps to compensate and savings were affected, but was still substantial. In spite of the low night temperatures the production results were not negative, but tendency to lower mortality.

Farmers experiences indicate more weight at end of batch. Two extra kg have been seen constantly over years. In average we predict 1 kg extra.

A farmer with 8 sections each is holding 480 weaners produces 24,000 pigs per year. A gain of 1 kg is 24,000 kg extra, which has a value of almost € 25,000 per year, because you use the same amount of feed.
